A jazzy Halloween with sounds of the future unfolds this Sunday, Oct. 31, when the Tucson Jazz Institute presents its showcase gig at St. Philip's Plaza, River and Campbell.

The next concert in the Tucson Jazz Society's Jazz Under the Stars series presents the top student big bands in a concert setting. Middle school and high school students put forth a powerful sound, with all proceeds going to the jazz institute's scholarship program and to provide travel funds for upcoming jazz festivals and a 2011 summer European tour.

Last summer, TJI's Ellington Big Band was in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival at New York City's Lincoln Center, where it was honored by Wynton Marsalis as the top community high school big band in the United States.

That same group of prize-winning players will be on the St. Philip's Plaza stage, letting Tucson fans "hear the best high school jazz band in the land," a release said. For this night only, in the spirit of Halloween, the young musicians are performing as the HELLington Band.

Another TJI aggregation, The Basie Band, is getting a spot on the St. Philip's program Sunday. Its "nom de pumpkin" for Halloween is the Count Von Basie Band.

Not to be left out are the punched-up members of the Buddy Rich Band, playing Oct. 31 as the Bloody Rich Band, and TJI's Blue Note Combo which will be called the Boo Note Combo.

Everyone is encouraged to wear a costume, and take part in the costume contest. A raffle for restaurant gift certificates to Pastiche will be a part of the festivities, as well.
