One writer to get a free oral makeover

An Oro Valley and Tucson orthodontist company is putting on a contest for young writers, with one winner getting a complete orthodontic makeover valued at more than $3,000.

“I Want a New Smile” is for students ages 13-18. They may write a 100-word essay, along with a current photo of their smile, to Dr. JAW Orthodontists, at www.DrJAW.net.

Drs. James A. Weaver, Laura Robison-Rabe and Kyle Rabe, along with other professionals at Dr. JAW, are reviewing all entries, with plans to announce a winner on Jan. 7. That winner must agree to have their photo in Dr. JAW advertising and on its web site, a release said.

More information is on the website. Dr. JAW Orthodontists has been in practice since 1986 in Tucson, and has two locations. The phone number is 747-5297.

Art from Spain presented at Sunday meet

A presentation, “Great Masterpieces from Spain’s Prado Museum in Madrid,” is being presented at the monthly meeting of the International Travel Network Travel Club this Sunday, Dec. 12.

Jan McGary, art historian and photographer, gives the illustrated talk at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Nanini Public Library, 7300 N. Shannon. It is free and open to the public.

The Prado Museum holds a “profusion of famous paintings” collected by Spain’s wealthy rulers. The Hapsburg royalty – Charles V, Philip II and Philip IV, as well as the later Bourbon kings – filled their palaces with their favorite works, now hanging in the Prado. Among the painters are van der Weyden and Bosch from Flanders, Titian from Venice, and El Greco, Velazquez and Goya from Spain.

“A vicarious visit to the Prado would help any prospective tourist to Spain to prepare for a trip to Madrid,” a release said.

Refreshments are being served.

Encore Décor opens store in Oro Valley

Encore Décor, described as “an upscale, gently used furniture showroom,” has opened at 1171 E. Rancho Vistoso Boulevard in Oro Valley.

Betty Jones, designer and owner of Interior Expressions Design Showroom, intends Encore Décor to be “a safer and easier option for homeowners that are remodeling or upgrading their existing décor, and do not want to discard or resell the furniture themselves,” a release said.

The store is located in Mountain View Plaza, at the north end of Rancho Vistoso Boulevard. It occupies Suite 131.

Encore Décor handles all sales transactions, displays furniture in its showroom, and reupholsters items if the fabric is not suitable to the buyer. It can pick up and deliver furnishings. Items are on consignment and remain on the showroom floor for up to 120 days.

Encore Decor is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and by appointment on evenings and weekends.
