For much of the day Wednesday, employees of Sargent Controls & Aerospace are working at Quail Run Elementary School as part of the annual United Way Days of Caring.

They’ll volunteer time and energy at the 4600 W. Cortaro Farms Road school from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., planting in the Quail Run Environmental Area, and clearing overgrowth and cleaning desert ground around the campus and modular buildings. Volunteers are also building benches and additional seating areas for students.

Sixth grade Gifted Education in Marana students “will actively participate in these activities as they continue to increase their awareness of desert plants and environmental conditions,” according to a release from the school.

“Days of Caring present a wonderful opportunity for schools and local businesses to partner and support education. The activities of the day align with our curriculum and support our school theme of going green,” said Pennie Harcus, Quail Run principal.

“It is our hope to raise awareness of the importance of environmental education while bringing the desert to life for all the students at Quail Run Elementary,” said Michele Thelen, Quail Run Elementary teacher.

The Quail Run Parent Teacher and Friends Association is providing snacks and a catered lunch for the volunteers.

This is the second time Quail Run Elementary has participated in the Days of Caring event through United Way. The school, within the Marana Unified School District, serves 621 students in grades K-6.

For additional information, contact Harcus at 579-4700 or Tom Howard, Sargent Controls & Aerospace, at 572-4438.
