Eric Pansegrau and his wife Sheryl opened Monterra Furnishings on Memorial Day weekend, “just before the dead of summer.”

Soon thereafter, three other Dove Mountain Centre businesses closed, and the economy headed … north, with the snowbirds. Like Forrest Gump on his shrimping boat, Monterra Furnishings and others in the complex have been “riding out the economic storm.”

But there is new activity in the center.

Two restaurants are opening. Vero Amore, serving Neapolitan pizza, salad, panini, pasta, dessert and wine, is remodeling the former Fire Restaurant space. It has a location on Swan, and hopes to open by Christmas. The Dove Mountain Grill is an offshoot of VinTabla restaurant and wine shop in the Colonial Plaza at Campbell and Skyline. It also plans to open before the holiday season.

“Restaurants go well in a place like this,” Monterra’s Pansegrau said.

The specialty coffee shop Espresso Drini is next door. There is a Wells Fargo Bank, and soon a Walgreen’s. Catalina Mart, an Allstate Insurance office, Dove Mountain Cleaners, Cost Cutters, Northwest Allied Physicians and Long Realty also have storefronts in the center.

In January, the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course at the Ritz-Carlton is unveiled, with the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain Resort and related exclusive housing coming later in 2009.

How might the Ritz-Carlton development affect Pasengreau’s business? “I don’t know yet,” he said, but it’ll certainly be welcome.
