Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson and Mark Rusin, owner of The Loop Taste of Chicago, go way back. In 1969, when Rusin was a 14-year-old freshman at Quigley South High School on Chicago’s south side, a young Father Kicanas taught there. He was just out of the seminary and became a teacher and mentor to the future restaurant owner.

Father Kicanas inspired young Mark and attended many of the teenager’s school sporting events along with Rusin’s parents, Richard and Adeline.

In January, Rusin’s father passed away, and the bishop called to express his condolences and offered to say a mass in Richard Rusin’s honor.

Bishop Kicanas also visited with Rusin and his wife, Marcie, at The Loop last month, and the men reminisced about those early days in Chicago.

“The evening marked a wonderful tribute to my dad. It was also a great indication that Tucson has the most wonderful and caring bishop on the planet,” Rusin said.
