Del Kyger graduated from the University of Arizona, but anyone who has walked into his orthodontics office could tell you that.

Slightly north of Magee Road, on the east side of Oracle Road, sits Del Kyger Orthodontics nestled in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. The office has been open in the Oro Valley location for just over a year.

It is close enough to the mountains that they sometimes have javelina come through the courtyard, at 8444 North Oracle, Suite 130.

Kyger grew up on the northwest side, going to Cross Middle School, and then went to Amphitheater High School. After getting a degree in history from the local university in 1989, he did his dental schooling and orthodontics residency at the University of California, San Francisco.

Growing up in Oro Valley, Kyger always knew he was going into field of dentistry. When he was younger, his best friend’s father was a dentist and Kyger saw how much he loved his job.

Kyger originally wanted to be a dentist, but during his schooling, it came time for his orthodontics rotation. He found himself getting excited for school and to go to class. That’s when he knew he wanted to go into the orthodontics field.

“It’s a really fun job,” he said. “You give people beautiful smiles. There are some people that, literally, this job changes their lives. That’s really rewarding.”

Etelvina Gonzalez, who is now in her early 20s, started seeing Kyger when she was in the fifth grade. Her lower jaw extended beyond her upper jaw, giving her an under bite. She wore braces, a retainer and a special mask at night that all helped to straighten her teeth and realign her jaw.

“I like to smile more now,” Gonzalez said. “It’s not just an awkward smile for me. I felt nervous every time I was happy. But now I don’t have to worry about my teeth or my smile.”

Gonzalez is just one of the many patients Kyger has seen since he opened his practice in 2000. He treats his patients for cross bites, under bites, over bites, teeth crowding or spacing. For the people who have serious issues, the benefits of having work done turn their life around.

“You can kind of see them open up and blossom during the course of the treatment because their self-confidence and self-image improves so much,” said Kyger.

Almost anyone of any age wanting something changed about their teeth and smile can be treated.

“A beautiful smile is not just for kids any more,” Kyger said. “Now we treat parents and grandparents with Invisalign. Straitening adult’s teeth out is a lot more comfortable than it used to be with traditional braces.”
