In today’s economy, businesses come and go. However, one firm is proving that by helping other businesses remain healthy, it has staying power as well.

The Jorgensen/Brooks Group celebrated its 20th anniversary last month. The company provides behavioral health program development, employee assistance program services, corporate training and consultation worldwide.

The company was founded in 1991 by Donald G. Jorgensen, Ph. D., CEAP, LiSAC, as Jorgensen Healthcare Associates, Inc.

The son of an alcoholic, Jorgensen was exposed to the need for behavioral health programs at an early age. He remembers being piled into a car with his three siblings at 2 a.m. to pick up his dad.

When he was 16, Jorgensen was asked to facilitate a group consisting of children of alcoholics. It was the start of a lifelong career in overseeing the needs of others, and an impressive list of credentials.

Jorgensen holds a Ph.D. in Health and Human Services Administration and an M.S. in Rehabilitation. He is past president of the international Employee Assistance Professionals Association, and serves on the boards of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and the YMCA of Southern Arizona. He has served on the Arizona State Board of Behavioral Health Examiners and is past president of Greater Tucson Leadership.

Jorgensen brought a strategic leadership approach to an international membership association that brought business and union leaders together to create fiscal stability and global development for the profession. He has established multi-national employee assistance programs, addiction treatment programs for adults and model programs for children of alcoholics in California and Arizona.

Jorgensen is an internationally known speaker, trainer and consultant to corporations, treatment centers, and professionals in North America, Europe and Asia. He has authored numerous journal articles and books, including Counseling Children of Alcoholics: A Treatment Guide and Secrets Told by Children of Alcoholics: What Concerned Adults Need to Know (co-author). Other works include “Creating a Drug-Free Workplace,” “Preventing Workplace Violence,” and “Demonstrating EAP Value.” His “EAP Buyers Guide” has been utilized by professionals and organizations worldwide.

He has twice been named Arizona EAP Professional of the Year. The award has been renamed in his honor.
