A new Walmart Supercenter, covering 176,000 square feet of retail space, opened Wednesday morning at Oro Valley Marketplace.

A grand-opening celebration at the 2150 E. Tangerine location was set for 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, with the bronze doors opening to the public at 8 a.m.

“Walmart put a strong emphasis on ensuring this supercenter will please the residents in Oro Valley,” said store manager Jeff Hughes.

A highlight of the grand-opening event is the presentation of $17,500 in grants from The Wal-Mart Foundation to local non-profit organizations with an emphasis on families and education.

“Walmart will be a partner in our community and has been involved from the day they announced they would be a part of our town,” said Mayor Paul H. Loomis. “This partnership will not stop with the ribbon-cutting ceremony. There will be a continued relationship between this Walmart and Oro Valley for years to come.”

The Supercenter plans to employ approximately 350 associates and will be open 24 hours daily.

This new store was constructed with energy-efficient technology and environmentally friendly features to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste, a release said. For example, part of the cement used in the store’s concrete flooring is made with recycled materials.
