Here at Pima Animal Care Center, we hope to defy expectations. And on the Friday the 13th, we’d like to throw in “Defy Superstition Day” for good measure.
Black pets get a bad rap. Take it from us – we’ve seen many of them and they’re just as nice as any other pet with any other color coat. But for whatever reason, they’re not as likely to get adopted as others. There’s even a phrase that’s been developed to highlight the phenomenon: Black Dog Syndrome.
Official statistics are elusive, but in a recent survey, Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that while pets are listed for about 12 weeks on Petfinder, less-adoptable pets -- such as black, senior, and special needs pets -- spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.
Maybe they don’t “show” as well in their kennels or in photographs compared to their lighter-colored or dappled counterparts. Maybe stigma plays a role, given witches’ cats and aggressive dogs portrayed in popular culture.
What we do know is that many families consider themselves very lucky to have their dark-coated buddies bring laughter and comfort to their homes.
For the weekend starting Friday the 13th, adoption fees will be waived for every black pet! A $15 licensing fee for spayed or neutered dogs still applies.
Come see if one of our svelte sweethearts is right for you. We’re open from noon to 7 p.m. Friday and this weekend from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
