2014 seems to be beginning with some interesting news in the world of video games. One of the most prominent videogame developers for Sony’s still relatively new Playstation 4 has announced that they are currently working on two different Playstation excusive titles that will be making use of the virtual reality headset, Oculus Rift.

For those unaware of what Oculus Rift is, it’s a virtual reality head mounted display that has been in development since mid-way through 2012. The device is being developed by Oculus VR who plans to make the device the next step in the world of gaming. Taking the videogame experience to a whole new level, the Oculus Rift will immerse the user into their gaming experience in ways only thought the mainstays of science fiction.

In July of 2012 Oculus VR raised $91 million for the development of the product, including an absolutely astonishing $2.4 million through crowd funding via Kickstarter.

To bring the dream of virtual reality even closer to your home, nDreams, a developer infamous for creating games for the Playstation Network, is now looking to put out two games on the Oculus Rift equipment by some point at the end of this year or early next year. To add to the hype of virtual reality in your own home, Patrick O’Luanaigh, CEO of nDreams recently released an investor letter adding some more details.

“We’re also working on a game for the awesome Oculus Rift. VR is an area of technology that we believe will finally come of age in 2014, and you’ll see us investing a great deal of time and money into it.”

Without offering any more detail or an insider look into the new operations, this seems a strong enough statement to say that the game developer is throwing their weight behind the Virtual Reality movement. nDreams has already developed Skydieving, a simulator game designed to test out the virtual reality capabilities of the Oculus Rift Headset.

It seems as though the days of sitting in front of a TV or computer screen are packing up their bags and heading out the door. With a legitimate virtual reality headset slated for a possible release sometime late this year or early next year, it will be extremely interesting to see how Microsoft counters this news. As there have been no major announcements from Microsoft concerning their own development and implantation of virtual reality, it seems as though Sony is really looking to put the final nails into the coffin on Microsoft’s Xbox One.

Now some of you may be thinking that this is just a shot in the dark, that there is absolutely no way that you and your family could be enjoying the effects of a true virtual reality experience right from the comfort of your own home. This is a completely warranted concern. Luckily for all of the naysayers and doubters, this train is only building steam. In the past year, some of the most prominent figures in the videogame industry of publicly endorsed Oculus Rift, including Gabe Newell of Valve, Cliff Bleszkinski of Epic Games and Unreal fame, and even Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide. With the big dogs throwing in their support for this new videogame system, it seems to be only a matter of time before you and your whole family will be taking their free time straight to the virtual reality headset for an adventure into worlds unknown. All from the comfort of your own couch.
