The Board of Trustees for Green Fields Country Day School selected longtime music teacher and middle school principal Becky Cordier as Head of School.

Cordier began teaching at Green Fields in 1986 after graduating from the University of Arizona School of Music with a bachelor’s degree in choral education. She also holds a master’s degree in educational administration from Grand Canyon University. She was promoted to principal of Green Fields middle school six years ago.

Founded in 1933, Green Fields is Arizona’s oldest independent day school and the only one in Southern Arizona offering a continuity of classes from kindergarten through 12th grade. This year the senior class includes six students who have attended Green Fields since the third grade.

Cordier said, "As a K-12 school, Green Fields has a unique ability to provide the benefits that come from multi-age interaction. Students of all ages can benefit from the chickens and greenhouse on campus. And a squid dissection can be as much of a learning experience for lower school students as for high school students – especially when they do it together."

As teacher, administrator and parent, Cordier believes Green Fields sets students on a path of lifelong curiosity and learning. Both her sons are Green Fields graduates. Five of her six nephews and nieces attend Green Fields. “A hallmark of our school is high-quality well-educated compassionate faculty,” she said. This is an environment where individuality is admired and nurtured.

The Green Fields curriculum includes core classes in English, social studies, science, math, fine arts, Spanish and French, plus technology, publications and competitive sports. K-8 students learn to read music and play both guitar and piano – thanks to Cordier.

Over the years her music students have participated in madrigal dinners, full-scale musical theater productions, Disneyland musical performances, junior musicals and a Renaissance Fair. Singers from Green Fields have been selected for the Southwestern regional choir, All-State Choir and University of Arizona Honors Choir.

The historic Green Fields campus spans 22 acres in northwest Tucson, part of an alfalfa farm that became a boarding school for boys. Today many activities are held outdoors. The eclectic grounds feature adobe-brick buildings from the 1930s and a geodesic art dome from the 1970s. Every high school student receives an Apple MacBook laptop. Lower school student tend gardens and chickens and sell their products at a weekly farmer’s market on campus.
