Dave Sitton died of a heart attack early Monday morning. The longtime University of Arizona broadcaster, rugby coach, and GOP Congressional District 1 candidate was 58 years old.
A former UA baseball and rugby player, Sitton began coaching the Wildcats' rugby team after an injury left him sidelined his senior year in college. He coached the team for 39 years.
He was also known as a prominent voice for the Wildcats' baseball and football teams, having acted as a broadcaster for both, and winning multiple Emmy awards for his work.
He ran in the 2012 special election to fill Gabrielle Giffords' seat, collecting 17 percent of the vote in a race won by fellow Republican Jesse Kelly. Kelly lost to Democrat Ron Barber in the general election.
Sitton was also very active in the community, and became well known for his work with the Tucson Conquistadores as well as the Pima County Sports and Tourism Authority.
Sitton is survived by two adult daughters, Olivia and Blakeney.
