Last night around 10 p.m., Northwest Fire District, the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Pima County Sheriff's Department, and the Marana Police Department responded to a call of a collision between a car and a motorcycle on Interstate 10 near milepost 238.

Upon arrival, public safety officials discovered a significant amount of debris, much of it coming from the struck motorcycle. According to Northwest Fire District spokesman Adam Goldberg, the driver of the vehicle initially involved in the collision remained on scene, as did a number of other drivers who subsequently ran the bike over.

The motorcyclist went missing after the initial collision.

A cooperative search effort ensued between multiple jurisdictions to find the rider using thermal imaging. The Cortaro Irrigation District drained nearby canals with no body found. The entire search shut the freeway down for five hours with negative results.

A witness later came forward, stating the motorcyclist had been seen walking away from the scene. Authorities followed up with the report, discovering the rider had walked to a nearby house and called somebody to pick him up. The rider was wearing protective equipment at the time of the accident.

DPS is aware of the individual’s identity, though they have not yet released it to the public, nor have they declared the reason for the biker leaving the scene.

The bike was not stolen.

Goldberg reminds the public to stay on scene in the event of any accident.
